Critters of all kinds

My home is in the game preserve in the Tucson Mountains where I have an opportunity to observe desert life as few have seen it. Javalina, deer, coyote, Gila monster, collared lizard, rabbits–these are my neighbors. . . . [T]here is no end to inspiration and material from these desert residents.

Mac Schweitzer, 1954, artist’s grant application

Living in a remote cabin in the Tucson Mountains and traipsing through the desert Southwest afforded Mac many opportunities to watch wildlife. She observed insects, birds, and four-leggeds closely as they traversed her expansive “yard.” Whether she was camping in the outback, helping out at ranches, attending bullfights across the Mexican border, or visiting the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, she was alert to her surroundings and the local inhabitants. The dead and dying creatures that she encountered also fascinated her.
